Paintings by Lars Michelsen

"My paintings are rendered in a 17th century Dutch technique (Van Ruisdaal was one of the originators) in which the painter works egg tempera highlights into oil glazes. Dammar varnish is in both media for bonding.

All of the paint is mixed to be translucent, from the ground coat to the final details. Only the white tempera is opaque — between the colored layers — which gives the surface more depth than other painting techniques offer.

David Small taught me this technique at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. I have never needed any other way to express my aesthetics."
